Funny enough, I was reading Gallup’s report a few days ago and struggling with a similar question: what changed!? There’s obviously no single answer but I keep coming back to your point about language. Corporate language has become increasingly humanistic over time (take purpose, belonging or authenticity) while the employment relationship seems to have become increasingly transactional. I don’t think all that language is cynical but as trust has eroded the gap between what organizations say work is and how the relationship actually feels has become harder to ignore. I wonder how much that contradiction itself is contributing to disengagement.

I think the contradiction is the hardest part. We can cope with bad news, we can cope with good news. Holding uncertainty is actually the most mentally taxing state to be in. Nothing ever gets resolved.

“Your company rents your skills but doesn’t own your professional identity” is a powerful reminder that we have more power than we think!

This morning going to work and reading this really hit home for me. Thank you ! You may not know but it shifted my mind on some of my perceptions of my work and myself

I’m glad I could help. You need a bit of distance to see how some of these ideas connect. Once you do that, it helps to resolve some of the confusing stuff you’re feeling internally. ❤️
